Fortnite was first released in 2017 and has seen many changes over the years. While the core of the game hasn’t changed, being a fast-paced battle royale with building mechanics involved, the game has received many updates across three chapters and a total of 19 seasons.
These updates, aimed at improving gameplay and drawing more people into the game, have constantly changed the way the game has been played. Elements big and small have been added and removed; from changing up the best weapons in Fortnite, altering how players utilize advanced Fortnite mechanics, to the many different map changes influencing how players move around, Fortnite truly is an evolving game that still attracts many players.
However, there are still a bunch of things that veteran players and those who first played the game in 2017 miss. Let’s go through a couple of the things OG players miss in Fortnite.
Graphics
A lot has changed in 5 years of gaming and understandably Fortnite has seen updates to the game’s visual fidelity over the years. While Chapter 1 didn’t have ray tracing or high-definition assets, the game still felt amazing. In fact, the way the game looked and felt is the exact reason why players flocked to Fortnite in the first place. Updating the graphics doesn’t impact gameplay too much, but players who started playing the game back in 2017 still reminisce about how the game looked in its early days.
Launchpads
Launchpads were a really cool advanced Fortnite mechanic when it was in the game. You just lay it down on the ground, jump on it, and you get launched into the air where you can glide to wherever you wanted to go.
This was a great mechanic to have and allowed players to travel greater distances across the map, escaping the storm or hunting down players. While there are other ways to get around the map now such as vehicles, using a launchpad still felt different and added a unique feature to this battle royale.
The old Fortnite Map
Probably the biggest thing that veteran players miss is the old Fortnite map. The original map from Chapter 1 has become iconic, with thousands of players memorizing its layout and having fond memories of dropping into places like Tilted Towers and Tomato Town. The minor changes that happened throughout Chapter 1 were also welcome, especially the Rifts that added a whole new advanced mechanic in Fortnite.
But with every succeeding chapter, the map has changed drastically. Even if they incorporate certain elements from the old Fortnite map, things still aren’t the same and somehow doesn’t quite live up to the charm that the original one had.
Sweat-free lobbies
As with any game, it takes a while for players to get the hang of things and become good at the game. Back when Fortnite first released, battle royale games were still kind of new and most players were on par with each other skill-wise.
Today, after 5 years of Fortnite and several other battle royale games becoming popular, a huge chunk of the player base is quite adept at advanced Fortnite mechanics: navigating the map, building complex structures, and getting kills. This alone has changed the experience of the game, making lobbies much sweatier and more difficult to survive in.
Many players, especially casual ones, miss when you can just load into a game and not have to worry about someone building a 10-story house fit for their whole family in 10 seconds. If only there was a way Fortnite could make things less intense with a more casual mode.
